Ben’s just bought a Fender Squier Strat Affinity as his first electric guitar. I was planning on getting him an electric for Christmas but he couldn’t wait and as he sold a load of his old toys to get it I couldn’t really say no.
I spent ages looking into beginner/entry level electric guitars before pointing him in the direction of the Squier Strat. The only really other contender was the Yamaha Pacifica which tend to be a little bit more expensive than a Squier but come with a good reputation (although don’t quite have that classic look in my opinion).
Cheap, but pretty decent!
So far I have to say I’m a bit of a fan. Ben bought the pack so he has a little 10w Fender amp, gig bag, lead, strap, picks, clip on tuner, picks and a few other bits. For £164 you get a lot for the money and from looking around on ebay they seem to hold their value pretty well if you want to upgrade at any point down the line, although the guitar will serve you well for a good few years.
While my guitar (Epiphone Les Paul) is away getting serviced I’ve been playing with Ben’s, and it’s pretty decent. I’m no expert but it feels good and it sounds fine. If you’re looking for a first electric at a good price then I’d definitely recommend a Squier Strat – you get a lot of bang for your buck!
Ben’s cost £160 from Rock Factory in Castleford, although you’ll be able to pick one up pretty much anywhere that sells guitars as they’re so popular. If you’re looking for a starter guitar for a beginner, stop looking, you’ve found it.
